Frequently asked questions

  • Who can Participitate?

Everyone in the Faculty of Engineering can participate in the MEC! Check the Competition Categories page to see which categories you are eligible to compete in.

  • What is MEC?

This event is a two-day competition, where over 300 engineering students are expected to compete across 8 categories. Teams of 4 (2 for debating, re-eng) work for 6 hours to build, test, prototype, and test their solution to a real-world problem. They are then judged by a panel of judges to determine the winners.

  • When is MEC?

The MEC will run from October 20th 2018 to October 21st 2018 (contingent on your team making it to the second day), see Schedule for more details.

  • Why do I need to pay $10 to compete?

The $10 fee for registration is a fully refunded deposit used to both secure your spot at the MEC and to help the organizers determine the quantity of material needed for dinner, breakfast, design store, T-shirts etc.

  • Do I even have a shot at winning at the CEC and OEC?

Every year the challenges change and with that, the winner does also. 2 teams from McMaster made it all the way to CEC and one of them came in 2nd at CEC 2018!!!!!! McMasters own Debating team came 2nd at OEC, re-strategized and won 1st place at CEC2017!.

  • What does an all expenses paid trip to the OEC and CEC really mean?

Last year the MES and Engineering Faculty were able to provide all 1st winners a spot at the OEC. This spot includes: admission to the OEC, all meals paid for and 2 nights stay at a hotel (OEC organizers choice). This package is valued at around $300-$400.

  • Do I need to have a group before I register or can I register for a category individually?

You do not need to have a group to register, all participants register individually here. It is recommended to form a group prior to registration to ensure all group members secure a spot. It is also recommended to form a multidisciplinary team for the Junior and Senior design categories, although we understand most students do not have too many friends outside their stream. Students who come to compete without a group will be placed in a group with other group-less ccompetitors
